Radio Versus Television

Not really a fair fight. Radio wins every time, except in ratings. It has content in the forms of; music, storytelling, news, & talk.

I have been binging on the radio version of Gun Smoke.
The depth of the characters, the stories themselves...so much more than the tv show.

In the radio version you have to imagine Matthew Dillon, not see this hulking man who would scare the Devil himself into contrition.

Kitty is a former prostitute. Yeah, that'd go over huge in 1950s America.

Doc calls people 'sonova bitch' more than any sailor I ever met. He is a mean, nasty drunk. The tv Doc is the progenitor for Bones in Star Trek literally as Dee Kelly was more a cowboy than a spaceman...by choice. He has his quirks and argues with Chester but is basically a sweet old fart.
Not the radio Doc.

The places where your mind has to fill in the voids is one aspect but the writing was something altogether different. Radio had much more grit having been around much longer and feeling like the older person who has nothing to be embarrassed or pleasant about as a choice.

The violence is whatever you are comfortable with imagining.

It also points out how sound makes a movie or tv or a story. Without the poignant, soaring violins, we probably won't cry at just the images. Without the sounds the chainsaw or knife becomes less.

Storytelling is an art form. One worth preserving. The spoken word, aural sex so to speak.

See? NPR agrees with me.

No,
Really.
There is light in the darkness, I'm just keeping my eyes closed.

Tossed

Tossed waves.
Tossed aside.

Inside the maelstrom the silence is deafening.
The rush of wind that never comes.
The smell of the air turned rancid.

Empower

I am a dragon coasting on the breath of the world.

I am a samurai, honed blade of steel.

I am a kitten.

I am the CEO of a major crime organization.

Walter Mitty has nothing on this one. I reach the heights. I touch stars.

I practice kung fu.

My book, my wandering, my mind.

Let Us Sing

Breathe in.
Feel life flow and cares ebb.

Smile now.
Feel more joy like fresh snow.

Close your eyes and feel the sun.
Exhale as weight evaporates.

The biting cold is my pulse.
My heart, the light of the world.

The future calls to me again with promise and heat.
Of possibilities and forces unseen, moving.

Fizzicks

Whirling particles.
Cars & people, tires & feet.

And smartphones. The protons that glue the particles together.

In orbit, unrecognizable the dance.
First one image then the other.
But never at the same time.

We flit from here to there.
Whirling things that we are.

How to Make Soccer Popular in North America - Rocket League

Soccer, or football to the rest of the world is probably the worlds most popular game. Billions of fans, some of whom take the title of fan to extremes.

But in North America soccer has never taken hold. World Cup, FIFA, seemingly nothing can spark an interest in the huge field, length of the game, elusive moments of exciting action, et cetera and so it has remained a phenomena that eludes us.

That may change.
What if you mix hotrods, high performance cars that play soccer complete with a huge ball, three on a side?
This may be just the thing to unite the little kid that still likes HotWheels with the crowd that ravenously consume e-sports.
The European contingent is huge, naturally. Germans seem to love the game. Russians as well.
But a strange thing is happening. North Americans are buying and playing the game in very large numbers.

The lurid colors are for the kids, the physics are for those of us who have played enough driving games to know garbage from fun if not 100% realistic.

The gameplay is fairly unique. Psyonix, the developers gave the cars two abilities that are a bit beyond reality. A rocket propelled Boost and the ability to vertically leap into the air. The car equivalent of a header. You can  then tumble end over end or roll about your lateral axis. You also have an instantaneous brake as well - applying forward and reverse at the same time.
(You must have a controller to be successful at this game; keyboard and mouse do not cut it - I suggest an Xbox controller rather than a PS controller)

The game has positions - Goalie, Forward & Striker - sounds like football, err soccer. Although players are not bound to play any role at all.

A match is five minutes long. It's simple to get twenty games in at one sitting.

There are ranking features including a leader board.
Some of the better teams have extensive recruitment going on.
(E-sports and games have grown to prizes of millions of dollars for winning teams. )

You can group together in a party or allow the game to match-make for you, although this is a source of frustration as senior players are sometimes teamed with newer players (An 800 player paired with a 200 player versus two 500s). The game is available for PlayStation and PCs - crossplay is the future.
(Xbox tried this and gave up, prematurely if you ask me - Shadowrun)

In a day and age when the standard fare is War or Wizards, a viable e-sports contender that is actually fun to play is exciting. This is one of those - "just one more game!" games.

Grateful When Things Just Are Okay

When in the midst of any crisis I find my mind closes out all but the issue at hand. I guess in an survival situation this might be preferable but in the regular run-of-the-mill world it wastes more energy and time than I can afford.

When things are going especially well I am insanely grateful. I find the time and the energy to reflect and be happy with my lot in life.

And after the crisis/upswell fades I fall back into the "daily persona."
Somewhat unaware. Looking for faults, scabs to pick.

Why am I not celebrating the small victories?
There are thousands of opportunities each and every day to find a smile inducing moment. Why not choose them? Laugh or cry. Perhaps that is too binary.

As the shine wore off having some form of income and employment I found myself looking for and finding faults. This kid is too haughty, this one is lazy, too self involved...
I'm hot. When is the shift over?

Wait, why am I seeing things this way? I am being binary.
Perhaps the kid is fearful of me. Perhaps his life has caused a self defensive wall to be raised. Who knows but in both cases I am making assumptions and not  - just being me.

I decide I am happy to be here. And that each face before me could use a smile.
The shine returned. I hum when I am standing there.
The sense of being grateful bloomed. Self curation.
The kids faces didn't change much but my attitude has and I understand why.

Now to apply this to my music.

Recharge Your Battery

Literally.

In two years I have gone through two motorcycle batteries because of lack of saddle time.

When I bought the bike in 2006 I rode to work and the round trip was close to one hundred miles.
I put on more than fifty thousand miles in two years.
Since 2008 I have put on a total of two thousand miles...nothing.

And the battery suffered.
To their credit, Asylum Motors replaced the battery at cost. But two batteries in two years is silly expensive; the thought of a third was depressing.
But who in SoCal needs a charger/tender? Turns out I do.

On eBay I found the NOCO genius G750. $28.99 with free shipping.
At half the cost of a new battery and the prospect of reviving and maintaining my battery no matter how little I ride it was compelling. I ordered on a Friday and received it on the following Monday.

I read the manual in under five minutes. Pretty straightforward.
Attach negative lead to battery, then the positive lead and then plug the charger into the wall socket.
Then select which voltage you need 6 VDC or 12 VDC.

It began charging.
I had hooked it up at one pm and the light began to pulse red. At six o'clock the light had turned green indicating the charging process was complete.
I put the key in the ignition, hit the starter - vroom, the motorcycle started immediately.

Prior to the process the battery was very weak. Only a clicking sound rather than actually turning the crank shaft. Less than 9 VDC.
In doing my reasearch online I found several "smart" tenders that would not apply a charge to a battery at less than 9 VDC. I was concerned about how low the voltage had actually fallen before I got to apply a charge.
No such issue with this genius G750. It specifies that it will, "Charge Fully Drained Batteries."
Amen.

More

Yonder snores Snow White.
The mother of my child and bane of my...it was a dark and stormy, no wait.

How we conflate this with that and make something else completely is a joy and a scare on the magnitude of  "Am I contracting Alzheimer's?"

The clouds like thoughts go scudding by.
"The check is in the mail."
"No, it's a bear."

"Thank you."
I am pulled and drawn back to reality; not bad at all.

The Holy, Forgotten Man

My name is never mentioned.
I am the smile that lubricates your day.
I am the two minute encounter that reinforces your hope and dreams, some black but ever my eyes are skyward.

I do not wish to be remembered other than, "that guy."
The smile should linger, if but for a moment.

Life Of A Guitar Player

As a guitarist, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper’s cemetery in the back country. As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost.
I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch.
I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn’t know what else to do, so I started to play.
The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I’ve never played before for this homeless man.
And as I played ‘Amazing Grace,’ the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I finished I packed up my guitar and started for my car. Though my head hung low, my heart was full.
As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, “I never seen nothin’ like that before and I’ve been putting in septic tanks for twenty years.”
Apparently, I’m still lost…

Nothing New

It seems music ebbs and flows much like any other organism upon this earth. There are times when great music is being pumped out as though it were owned by Mobil-Exxon.
Witness the 1960s through the 1980s until Disco killed the radio.

There are however, long stretches of 'in-between' time in which pop is poured out like concrete in the inner city.  Do not get me wrong, there are pop tunes worthy of replay, admiration, dissection and study. But for the most part the chaff far outweighs the wheat.
Just garbage.

And now that technology has made things such as autotune (technically manipulate any output, change pitch, tempo, timbre et cetera) possible what is really garbage comes with its own lipstick applied. What an ugly kisser!

Also this is not a nostalgia rant. I do not hold vinyl over digital but I do think Diana Ross could sing and I am not as sure about Nicki Minaj. I have found many contemporary vocalists who can more than carry a tune...Ingrid Michaelson for instance.
Caleb Hawley
Without resorting to gimmicks they have a natural quality that is very much endearing to the ear if not the mind.

We are in the midst of dead air time.
With the exception of the NPR radio stations I have yet to find quality music being broadcast anywhere.
Where I live there is one Jazz station and a plethora of talk shows or CleaChannel garbage passed off as "classic rock." They play the same tired tunes over and over. Jimi played more than 'Purple Haze.'

So dear reader, it is up to YOU to seek out and find the music worth hearing. It is out there, I know. I play it.

Windows 10 A Solitary Solitaire Tale

Painless for the most part.
A rather long install process starting with a three gigabyte download and then about 3 hours of installation of that download.
I went to sleep.
When I woke I had to reboot and was greeted with a very familiar layout. My desktop was intact. The Start menu looks about normal...a bit Windows 8-ish but otherwise fine. There is now a panel on the right side if I want to explore the touch side of Windows 10...and another place to hide more settings.

My only real recommendations are check your antivirus software before you begin the update process. Afterwards was a bit more of a pain but not that hard in any case.
And get the OEM video drivers for you system. If you have an integrated video card this may not apply.

My PC actually seems faster and snappier. It certainly boots much faster than Windows 7.

The biggest bone of contention I have noticed is the old favorites of Solitaire, Hearts et cetera are now an upgrade...a subscription no less.

Start/File Explorer/This PC/ then double click to open the C:\ drive and navigate to C:\Windows.old
Nestled within that you will find...C:\Windows.old\Program Files\Microsoft Games

And all your old rabbit holes are open for you to fall into anytime you desire.
You're welcome.

Peavey Steps Up When Guitar Center Falls Down

I called the representative at Peavey to order my $8 tension screw.
I was grinding my teeth in that I felt cheated.

My birthday present was unusable in the condition Guitar Center shipped it to me. A simple screw, ONE SCREW was missing. But when the strings are taken off, the tuner key simply falls out of the tuner assembly completely.

April, the woman who answered the phone at Peavey in the parts department took my information, checked with her technical guy and came back to me on the phone to tell me that they would send one complete tuner for the $8.
Not only did Guitar Center get the information wrong, they threw me under the bus.

Thank you April.

There Is A Reason Guitar Center Is Failing.

On my birthday my brother gifted me with a Peavey Bass from Guitar Center.
A great little precision bass lookalike.

However one of the tuners was missing the tension screw. When I took the strings off to clean the bass the tuning key fell out.

I emailed Guitar Center asking for a replacement screw. They came back with talk of "sold as is," et cetera.
Then they proffered to help me in my quest to make the bass playable. A series of emails wen back and forth. Several with exploded photos to show the missing part.

Two months later I get this email.

Your patience has been most appreciated!

Peavey just got back to me and this is what they had to say.

Hi Josh,

Our guitar tech, Steve, says he can get you one for $8.00. If you would like to place an order, please call 877-732-8391. We accept all major credit cards.

Thanks,

April

I can buy a complete tuner for the same price.

Guitar Center - while it can be said they were making an attempt to help a customer have done little more than insult me by the length of time taken to tell me I have to pay to fix a broken instrument they sold me.

There is a reason why I never choose to go to Guitar Center.
Never mind they want to search you when you leave (which is not legal) a store, but now they can't help a customer without a cost passed on.

This Is Not What I Planned

If your Nexus 7 starts to shut off seemingly randomly, check the sleep settings. Chances are they are not set, so it goes into sleep almost immediately. This setting was set to default after a reboot.
Note to self.

If you own any device powered by Li-Ion batteries you should NOT keep it plugged into a charger.

The memory foibles of Li-Ion are different than Ni-Cad.
What will happen is your device will start to behave as though it is broken until you reboot. The keyboard will not function or the phone will seemingly not dial a number until you hit the back key, et cetera.
Allow the device to tell you when it needs a charge and leave it unplugged until then.
Note to self.

10 Tips for Better Lyric Writing
Written by Robin Yukiko - August 14th 2012

There are as many lyric-writing styles as there are genres. From conversational and literal to poetic, abstract, and even nonsensical. Whatever style you embody, you can always improve your craft. Here are some tips on how to do that.

Have a theme. Themes don’t make your lyrics boring, they make them cohesive. Think of Somewhere Over the Rainbow and its whimsical sky references (clouds, birds, stars, chimney tops). It’s about world-building that sweeps the listener away.

Try to stay away from perfect rhymes. Day and way. Run, fun, sun. They sometimes ring as childish, especially if the context is not interesting enough. Be more adventurous and less strict (fade and wait, mine and kind, crazy and maybe, etc.).

Make the context interesting. If you are singing the same old love song, say it in a different way. Build from real memories, real conversation, or unusual metaphors.

Put the rhymes in unusual places (internal rhymes, in the middle of phrases). It adds meat to the bones of your song.

Change up the rhyme scheme. An example from Pat Pattison, “Mary had a little lamb, fleece was white as snow. And everywhere that Mary went, she sold the fleece to pay the rent.”

Put the emphasis on the right syllable. As much as I love Alanis Morissette, she has an annoying habit of misplacing accents, making it incredibly awkward and difficult to understand (“an un-for-TU-nate slight,” instead of “un-FOR-tu-nate” in Uninvited). If you are dead-set on a lyric that stresses the wrong syllable, don’t be afraid to change the rhythm to set it right. You can also add or take away unimportant words like “that” or separating contractions. Personally, I know a lyric is right when it sounds as if I could speak it naturally.

Make your choruses more general than your verses. This is not a hard rule, but it helps to “change scenes” after your verse.

Be ruthless about clichés. Speak your lyrics aloud to spot them. When you find them (and you probably will), try changing only one word to something unexpected.

Keep writing different versions of the same section. You can always go back to the original, but you never know what you’ll come up with on try #5.

Don’t be afraid of the tools in your arsenal. Get a thesaurus. And a rhyming dictionary.  Even if you don’t use the words you find, they can sometimes inspire other ideas. So can novels, newspapers, facebook updates, and people-watching.

You may have sensed a theme by now. Always ask yourself if you can do better. You usually can. But eventually, like a new car, you have to take it for a drive and see if it gets you there. Play it live, get honest opinions from your peers and mentors, and revise. You can play it for friends and family, but don’t expect much more than general praise. Ultimately it’s up to you, as writer Neil Gaiman would say, to make good art. And know when it’s done.

Comic Books and Other Zero Calorie Food

Someone recommended an independently made series, Burn Notice.
It is a show about a former spy, his girlfriend, his mother and a few other ancillary people - Bruce Campbell, anyone?

It's the A-Team redux.

A woman who is there for titillation only, her character is two dimensional at best. A best buddy who drinks, a mother who wants to connect emotionally with her ex-spy son.
Where is Mr. T?

The writing is so predictable that not only did Nostradamus speak about the show in his writings, but the formula is used in every single show. It never deviates.
At least M*A*S*H* played with all sorts of layouts from telling the story from a soldiers points of view to doing a show in Black and White as a TV documentary. And then it was well written.

Writing on a television show is akin to depth of lyrics in music, the difference between a pop tune and a Beatle tune.

When well written a song or show transforms the landscape around you for the time it is playing.
I would guess that some of the construction techniques transfer between the written word and the notated score.
A writer of stories uses vocabulary and a sense of the world that they can put into words. Musicians use musical vocabularies and the same sense of what makes the world go 'round to communicate their feeling to you, the listener.
Sometimes it is very specific and sometimes purposefully vague...in both worlds.
In all worlds.

Comic books and pop tunes can be great, too.

Music And The Words Behind It

Music like art can have as many meanings as we the audience want. It can be interpreted to fit most any situation. But you must listen or gaze to obtain anything from the piece.

Words can be malleable like that, but the art of communication is a bit more strict in it's proper implementation. To be successful, to be good at communicating means a practiced art of listening. Not formulating your thought while the interviewer is speaking.
Absorbing all that is laid before you, not trying to bring it in for a landing...prematurely. There is naught gained by this. The initial idea might have been empathy,

"I know what you are saying, so I will finish the sentence to show you that we are grokking."

By its utterance we have abdicated our responsibility to the other person and have dismissed their thoughts. I know what you are saying is not the same as we share much in common.
To SHARE you have to give & take.

Dominance? Dismissive? Superior? Boredom? Disinterested?

Why don't we want to take the time to listen?

To play a musical solo well we are listening first and then answering. If not it was a canned riff in response to the song.

When you get a new record, do you look at the cover and tell Carlos, Eric and Jimi,
"I already know what you are about to say, so allow me to finish this album for you?"

It is a practiced thing, both musically and while communicating. We are born with the ability to hear the pleasing sounds but it takes practice to sit through a complete piece to gain the perspective looking back can impart.

(Open Country Joy - Mahavishnu Orchestra. It begins with a serene rambling sort of jam...fades. A vibrant call and answer piece begins. The piece ends abruptly and the serene rambling jam returns - my head jerked up..."This was one tune?")

Lesson taken...now to work it into a polished thing.

The Mind To The Fingers

How you get what you hear in your head out into the world is a strange mix of muscle memory and a unique perspective. Savants know what I am talking about.

Music is a symbolic language - like math.
It evokes everything - emotions, intellectual thought, love, hate and everything in between. There is the autonomic - a rhythm of 60 to 100 beats will cause an involuntary reaction - it mirrors a heartbeat.
There are voluntary and involuntary reactions.

Some of that is unique perspective - but mostly it is hardwired. What we refer to as a musical ear.
I don't understand the mechanics of why I hear what I do. But I hear music in noise, in whispers of faith and joy and love. I hear music in almost everything I do.

Because it is so very integrated within me it seems perfectly natural to me.

My music issues always stem from my thoughts, not my physical prowess or lack thereof. My fingers are very much slower than 40 years ago and yet my playing is so much better.
My maturing as a person has allowed for the thoughts and sounds in my head to flow fairly easily.
This is not to say that I never have writer's block. I do, frequently. But when I hear something it is easy for me to translate the image into sounds.

I feel harmony more than I did as a kid. I depend on others and appreciate a team effort. As a kid I was the rebel, Cool Hand Luke. I needed no one or anything. That has changed with time. I have come to appreciate people and the ties we make and keep so much.

And yet, except for my very formative years, it has never been that difficult for me to express myself with music.

Call me Rainman.

Verizon Tale Update

Verizon finally received the returned phone and acknowledged it,
 6/14, 10:49amVerizon Wireless
Thanks Ernie, we reply to messages in the order they are received. I do see that the warehouse has notated your account to indicate that the device was received in the warehouse and a refund will be applied. Did you have any other questions or concerns we could assist with while we're reviewing the account? - Dan
I did notice a charge for the phone on my bill, $355. I called a verified that I was not to pay that charge and that the charge would be removed in the following cycle.

Today as I was examining by bank account I saw a credit from Verizon in the amount of $66.19 - this was the upgrade fee ($40 + CA sales tax). "Uh oh,"
I think. "This can't be good."
I call Verizon and speak with Felicia who tells me that yes the $355 will be credited the next cycle and the refund of the $66.19 was a goodwill gesture.

I was one who wanted to see the breakup of Ma Bell and now regret what I got in return.
That said, we all make mistakes...monoliths tend to miss them more than the rest of us. But it what we do in response to the mistake that defines who we are.

Kudos Verizon.

My Replacement Phone - A Positive Verizon Tale

My old phone, a Motorola Droid DX2 is long in the tooth. Very long.
As a birthday gift I was given the opportunity to acquire an updated phone. A Samsung S4 Mini. It too is not brand new in terms of technology but it is a quantum leap beyond the DX2.

I order the phone - a refurb. It arrives in two business days.
I go through the activation process, it ends with, "You have successfully activated your new phone."
At this point you are to, "Turn off your old phone now."
I removed the battery. (Um, this is not shutting down the phone, ya dope)

After a while I noticed the new phone stayed with the charging screen and nothing else - no phone properties whatsoever.

A quick live chat session with Verizon support which then led to a call to Verizon Wireless customer support on the old phone. While I am talking to the CS agent I realized my error in the shut down process - since I had not shut the phone down it was active and the new phone was just a flashlight at this point.
I saw the red Verizon screen bloom on the new phone. I ended the call and then properly shut the old phone down. The new phone continued the process and a setup wizard appeared.

It works and I am pleased. But the battery goes from 100% to 30% in a couple of hours.
Hmmm...
The next day I go to turn the phone on and it fails to power up. I do the three finger dance to boot into safe or developers mode...nothing. It's dead.

I pulled the battery, waited and then replaced the battery and plug the phone into the charger. The phone boots. This scene is repeated twenty times or more during the day...every time I try to turn the phone on.
After farting around all day trying one thing after another that I found online  I decided to call Verizon again.
Two hours later...yeah, I am frustrated like a librarian in an E-Book store, I got a sympathetic supervisor to replace my flaky phone with a new one, not a refurb. There are a few hoops in between, but they are the price of business these days.

New phone arrived on Saturday. I have had practice with the activation procedure...so now it goes smooth as silk. I put the battery into the phone and wait for it to charge and then prepare to use it until it reaches 20% or so before charging it again.
(Li-Ion batteries can be damaged if discharged too much too often or if plugged into a charger all the time)
It's Sunday - I rode my bike for two hours, used the phone. Ate lunch, used the phone. In other words I used it moderately. And yet I am at 72%?

As a friend pointed out, this is how it is supposed to work.
Gawd, I am grateful. For both the gift and the working technology.

Malware Addendum

There is a site I utilize to watch tv not otherwise available. I have used it for a year or more with nary an issue. Then all of a sudden I started seeing popups that told me I needed to update Shockwave/Java/Media Player et cetera.
I know these type of popups are malware inducing, click "Ok" to install their update and you have installed a rootkit piece of malware. The nastiest kind.

And then I remembered that because I found some malware associated with Adblock, which is an extension for Google Chrome, I had removed it.

Ah ha.

Found an equivalent extension (AdKiller for Chrome) and installed it, voila - no more popup garbage.
Wear your protection out there.

Shopglider Malware Odyssey

All of a sudden I was getting popups for "deals" at various merchants through some entity known as Shopglider. It had a nice X that I availed myself of...to no avail.
Over and over it would show up. Any double clicking on single click pads would cause it to open.

I tried everything I could think of:
Malwarebytes
Runscanner
Adwcleaner - I suspect this is garbage
TDSSkiller - a rootkit finding program.
My AV - a total system scan.

Still there.
What I had noticed was it seemed to be limited to Chrome. I do not run any extension with any other browser.

Every hit on Google regarding this were the same suggestions and many suggested paid programs so I suspect they were naught but "ambulance chasers," if not the instigators themselves.

I finally started to look at threads on Google+
Lo & behold I found something unseen up until this point. A suggestion that it was somehow piggybacked along with the Adblock Pro extension and by disabling and then re-enabling the extension would remove the malware.
I decided to just replace Adblock Pro with Adblock (an unrelated extension with a similar name) and so far - 2 days, have not seen a shopglider ad yet.

Malware blows.

"ShopGlider is an adware program that displays pop-up ads, advertisement banners and sponsored links within Internet Explorer, Firefox and Google Chrome.
Unfortunately, some free downloads do not adequately disclose that other software will also be installed and you may find that you have installed ShopGlider without your knowledge.ShopGlider is advertised as a program that displays coupons for sites you are visiting and competitive prices when you are viewing product pages at sites like Amazon. Though this may sound like a useful service, the ShopGlider program can be intrusive and will display ads whether you want them to or not.The ShopGlider adware infection is designed specifically to make money. It generates web traffic, collects sales leads for other dubious sites, and will display advertisements and sponsored links within your web browser.
ShopGlider it’s technically not a virus, but it does exhibit plenty of malicious traits, such as rootkit capabilities to hook deep into the operating system, browser hijacking, and in general just interfering with the user experience. The industry generally refers to it as a “PUP,” or potentially unwanted program."

Virtual Sailor

I have a program that I have enjoyed as a sort of virtual fish tank - Virtual Sailor.
Written by Ilan Pappini, it allows you to sail many type of boats in many areas of the world.

It is not something I stare at, rather it just runs and I peek in now and then as I read a book or play my guitar - things I have done on boats while in the midst of a longer ride.
Then I found The VSF Boat Shop run by one Steve Sharp.

Steve has meticulously recreated a nice array of boats. From  34 foot day boats to 160 foot schooners.
I have purchased from Steve in the past, but the level of detail has been ratcheted up significantly.

I got a nice schooner, built in 1905 and refitted 2003 - 2006.
(If I had the $18,000,000 the owners are asking...)
A crew of 5 with 6 guests, a luxurious floating Victorian age hotel - I have not found one television screen, yet.

So I decide to take a ride to Hawaii. (Yes, Steve made one heckuva scenery set - Maui. I'll tell you about it after I land)
It's been almost two days and I am close to 500 nautical miles from the port of departure, Bellingham Washington, in a hailstorm...yeah a hail storm.

The attention to detail goes well beyond the visuals. Another schooner that was built as racing boat will heel 25 degrees or more in the 30 knot winds outside of Seattle while this boat sits almost upright with a heel angle of 5 degrees in 28 knots of wind and hail that is more than impeding our forward progress.
We had been averaging 12.5 knots for the first 30 hours. But now in the middle of this weather, I am torn - should I reef to avoid damage to the sails...and thereby slow down even more?

There is just something satisfying in having this ride going on as my background noise. Much better than having the drone of the television.

This will be one really fun ride.

Life & Rhythm

Laugh or cry is our choice in life when presented with the little trials and tribulations of the day.

When the sun is low in the sky you can see the snow of everyday life. There are the dust motes, feathers, bits of hair...all the things that make up the world around leave tiny bits of themselves floating past the rest of us to breathe in...or to listen to.

A cars brakes screeched loudly. Then I heard it. A bass line just started in my head. It ran and looped. The brakes made the highlight. A high hat, a time keeper.
The birds played a chord. A train in the distance blew its horn in synchronicity with the rest of the piece.. Everything just fit together with no effort from me. Like breathing.

This...THIS is also laugh or cry. We can choose to hear what music is all around us or we can hear only noise...discord.

In five minutes of opening Band In A Box I had a new composition - Early Earth Music.
Damnit - laugh with me. We can make the world a wonderful place just by dancing to the rhythms that surround us.

Time Dialation

Right.
We all know the phenomenon. When you are watching the clock, time proceeds extraordinarily slow.

I got a very part time job recently. All of two hours a day when I am called to action as I am an alternate - covering for the regulars.
For forty five minutes at a stretch I ply my trade - safely crossing "peds" (hey, that's what the manual says) during school.
I am a crossing guard.

A forty five minute stint is SO short one should be able to complete it without a thought.
And yet...
When I look at my watch it feels as though time completely stops. Yeah, we are all familiar with this.
"What?! Only two minute have passed?"

So I left my mind wander.
Somewhere down the street someone had opened a drain and water began coming down towards me. I watched the leaves and street debris forming breaks and barriers. Seeing the ebb & flow of the water. Thoughts just swirled.
This is what I, what we all did regularly as a children.

Ten minutes passed without notice.
And I had relaxed as well. The down time is appreciated.

Have A Little Passion

It is a good thing to be completely consumed by a love for something. Not to be ruled or dictated to by that love; it is not a need so much as a part of who you are when you wake up in the morning.

I have passions.
I enjoy many diverse things.
But for some reason they all seem to tie together...almost neatly. Einstein would be proud of my unified universe.
I walk the earth and smell the air and my lungs fill with a rich ache, a memory perhaps. Or maybe a present fulfillment? And then I hear music. My heart beats and I feel music. Everything I do seems to lead me back to some innate thing inside. I have intuitive understandings that are incredibly deep and yet I haven't the words to put them before people. So I sing about them instead.

Everything in life is musical to me. I wonder if carpenters feel wood in everything they touch? I would suspect as much. It is natural. I am not really different than anyone else. Some of us proudly wear our passions. Most do not, and that is a sad thing. Probably what Hippies were trying to explain. Acting responsible does not mean foregoing love of anything, no matter how small society deems it.
Give your inner voice a chance to be heard.
I'll listen.

It's the Beat, Stoopid...If You Are a Guy

Open My Eyes - The Nazz

Underneath your gaze I was found in
The haze I'm wandering around in
I am lost in the dark of my own room
And I can't see a thing but the fire in your eyes
Clear my eyes, make me wise
Or is all I believe in lies
I don't know when or where to go
And I can't see a thing 'til you open my eyes
I've been told by some you'll forget me
The thought doesn't upset me
I am blind to whatever they're saying
And all I can see is the fire in your eyes
Clear my eyes, make me wise
Or is all I believe in lies
I really don't know when or where to go
And I can't see a thing 'til you open my eyes
Can't see a thing 'til you open my eyes
Can't see a thing 'til you open my eyes
Can't see a thing 'til you open my eyes
Can't believe that it's on your mind
To leave me behind
Clear my eyes, make me wise
Or is all I believe in lies
I really don't know when or where to go
And I can't see a thing 'til you open my eyes
Can't see a thing 'til you open my eyes
Can't see a thing 'til you open my eyes
Can't see a thing 'til you open my eyes
Can't see a thing 'til you open my eyes
Oh my eyes
Oh my eyes
Oh my eyes

Not what I'd consider a happy tune. Rather dark and a bit disturbing.
And yet to me, it is a dance tune?
There is a driving bass line and the drums are just pushing me forward. I cannot help but smile.
I find I am drawn by the window dressing to the message and completely ignoring the lyrics. This happens all the time.

Is it a male thing? To ignore content and stare at the package?
My female friends, I am guessing would probably rate lyrical content higher than the music itself. Would allow for a less than perfect composition if the words had deep, personal meaning.
Males are said to be shallow...is this proof?

Obviously it does not ring as truth 100% of the time. There are many songs in which the words have far more for me than the music.

Some of those songs are for me anchors to memories and not deep lyrics at all.
'Jesus Just Left Chicago' is a perfect example. I think of my father.
Or the Stones 'Wild Horses.'

Just as often the lyrics do resonate deeply within me.
'Southern Cross' can make me weep. The music is not all that great. But the harmonies with Stills and Nash are chill inspiring.
And the words - how I fooled myself for a long, long time and gave up what was important to me for someone that didn't see the gesture.

Since I am 51% or more male (the aftermath of midlife?) I can see how each side of me reacts in a different way.
I do suspect a sexual component in our listening. Perhaps it is only a part of humanity and the isolation we have to live with. To be able to share anything with another is a blessing and a joy, no matter why.

We're Doing It Wrong

I know how to defeat ISL.
You gotta be the Borg and assimilate them. There is no winning of hearts and minds. There is the currency of Rome, the habits of Rome, gee...we are Romans.
Let them have a generation as a conquered people; and install all the institutions of the conquering nations.
Set up the currency, the dollar, naturally.
Make the most radical, violent fundamentalists the heads of the armed forces.
Make them recite the Pledge of Allegiance everyday.
Make consumer goods available to everyone. Make free and easy credit a feature, not a bug.
If you make them one of us, what reason would they have to revolt? If you give them things, they will have something to lose.

I wonder to whom I am speaking?

What do You Hear?

Put your hand on your heart and what do you hear?
Touch your soul to another and what sound do you hear?

When the wind howls and the nips are biting. When the cold is tolerable.
When the stars shine a bit brighter.

But what do you hear?

Do you hear the grasshopper at your feet?
The typing as you write?
The desk lamp singing to you?

A symphony in the noise.

Spy Party

We all love a good party, right?
How about a good party in which the hosts pull out games for the party goers to play?
Chenga or Pictionary...

How about a Spy Party?

"SpyParty is a tense competitive spy game set at a high society party. It's about subtle behavior, perception, and deception, instead of guns, car chases, and explosions. One player is the Spy, trying to accomplish missions while blending into the crowd. The other player is the Sniper, who has one bullet with which to find and terminate the Spy!"

That is the game in a nutshell. It is asymmetrical in that the two players are doing very different things with differing loads to bear. The Sniper has to process a lot of information - there are a lot of party goers...and the tells to which is the AI and which is the other human player can be extremely subtle.
The Spy is trying to carry out a series of tasks without being spotted as the human player.

Beyond the gameplay itself there is a wonderful, nurturing community the developer, Chris Hecker (Checker) has grown along with his code baby.
When playing, one is almost expected to share insights and thoughts. The veterans of the community will mentor and teach those with fewer games. The regulars stream their games, chatting with online people who question moves and strategies.

An easy game to pick up but insanely sophisticated to master. The level of games within a games can be infinite.
So as a noob I was asked to be on the community podcast sharing what concerns or needs the newer players encounter. I had a blast.
Natch.
